When Life Handed Her Lemons, Alex Scott Fought Cancer

In 2000, just after she turned four years old and while receiving treatment for neuroblastoma, a childhood form of cancer, Alexandra Scott told her mother she wanted to set up a lemonade stand to benefit the doctors who “help little kids, like they helped me.” Later that year, she and her family opened the first lemonade stand in what would become an annual tradition and raised $2,000.

Lemonade Stand Grows into $150 Million Nonprofit

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

The mission spreads

By the time Alex succumbed to cancer in 2004, she had helped raise more than $1 million. Her family then formed the Foundation to carry on Alex’s fight as people from all over the world began setting up their own stands and events. To date, it has raised more than $150 million.

Growing beyond lemonade

Even as the Foundation saw 10% annual growth, leadership recognised they needed new approaches to fundraising. It diversified, hosting athletic and culinary events in cities across the U.S., an annual ball where children share their cancer stories, a telethon in Philadelphia and more.

Establishing a Cancer Data Lab

In an effort to use Big Data in the arsenal to fight childhood cancer, the Foundation founded the Childhood Cancer Data Lab—harmonising and making large scale sets of data on childhood cancer accessible. It has built out a team of data scientists, engineers and designers to create an informatics lab using publicly available sources, to make data available and also to train childhood cancer researchers in techniques to use data.

Modernising financials to support the mission

To automate cumbersome, manual processes, the Foundation replaced an outdated Blackbaud system with NetSuite in just nine months with NetSuite Professional Services and has gained visibility into the organisation, tracking donor information and managing multiple revenue streams and reducing administrative costs, while funnelling 85% of donations to programs.
