Scottish Nonprofit Improves Its Service to the Homeless with NetSuite CRM

For more than 50 years, Simon Community Scotland has helped the homeless of western Scotland with shelter, nourishment and support to build better lives. The nonprofit aids over 3,000 individuals a year with emergency and longer-term housing, as well as life skills counseling and other interventions. A move to NetSuite and a software donation by Oracle+NetSuite Social Impact has given Simon Community breakthrough capabilities to fulfill its mission.

“NetSuite fundamentally helps us provide better service to service users through intelligence that we didn’t have before.” Hugh Hill, Director of Services and Development, The Simon Community Scotland

Simon Community Turns New Insights into Social Action

Unified data drives better service, strategy
Until 2015, Simon Community managed information on service users with pen, paper and Excel, meaning laborious work and fragmented data. Today, the nonprofit uses NetSuite CRM as a unified repository for its supported population, gaining insights that translate into more effective service and strategy. For instance, centrally mapping “rough sleeping” locations helps street teams zero in with help in key areas.
More informed actions, positive outcomes
Managers are saving a half-day a week in paperwork, and no longer need to chase down information by phone and email. That means more time for staff training and highly focused services. Staff at, say, a Glasgow location can quickly look up whether an individual was aided in Edinburgh. Tracking health, history and other data points means more informed actions and positive outcomes.
Award-winning nonprofit innovation
In one new insight, Simon Community saw for the first time that 75 percent of service users smoked, prompting new smoking cessation initiatives. In a next step, the nonprofit plans to roll out NetSuite Inventory Management to track food, clothing and other goods for distribution in a recently acquired warehouse that will build on the nonprofit’s success, recognised with a coveted Herald Scottish Digital Business Award in 2017.
